A quick look around online many retail shops & you could be forgiven for believing that Halloween was a celebration of Chinese plastic factories.  However, dig a little deeper on retail sites & you may find traditional folkart handcrafted items.

Unlike the far eastern plastic items which are cast from molds in their thousands, there are independent creators making highly individual & unique traditional folkart items which will stand the test of time.

Whilst plastic items are likely to end up languishing in landfill (or worse discarded into the environment) traditional folkart handcrafted items are far more likely to become treasured family heirlooms and in all probability eventually become the highly prized treasured collectible objects to be sought in antique shops of the future.

My poor Art Blog - but Kuriology sales have never been so good?

My poor Kuriology blog. It has been a little neglected. 

In part this is due to spreading myself a little thinly. An Etsy store, folksy store, ebay sales, twitter, tumblr, pinterest, google/mybusiness & the untimely death last year of my dear disability service dog.  (NB: Although this is not really a business, but the downsizing clearing of creations made as a result of coping strategy for disability). Basically posting about all over the place without a proper plan or process.

Time to stop & access, or as dear old Fagin said -'reviewing the situation'.

The idea being that through Kuriology to keep myself, hands & more particularly my brain, cognitively occupied to suppress the impact of clinically & forensically clinically diagnosed agoraphobia, PTSD, anxiety & panic attacks.  But not to stress myself out adversely.

To a degree my self devised strategy works - mostly.

*Kuriology had held off from venturing into international sales due to the fiasco which is Brexit causing all sorts of strife & woe in the UK  (Brexit = The result of trying to appease some right wing neo-nazi types in the British conservative party & now a concerning massing & manifesting of same ilk in the Brexit party).

There is genuine concern that Britain may be teetering on the brink of accidentally sliding into a quasi- fascist dictatorship under the rule of a privately & secretly funded party.  One with no political manifesto other than that of those willing to follow a virtual cult of perceived personality! 

Drinking pints in a pub does NOT make a man 'one of the people' - its just good PR for suckers & has been enabled by main stream media.

Eventually we said - 'to hell with it'...& we started listing Kuriology for international sales.

Bingo-A result - Americans, Canadians, French, Belgians, Germans & Chinese have all been buying Kuriology creations.

Approx. 50% of all Kuriology listings are now selling overseas!?  #WhoKnew?

As a collector myself, I sometimes have difficulty sourcing the type of items I like to buy.  Also finding things at the realistic prices that my meager disposable income will allow me to purchase is also a problem.  Being restricted in my mobility & living in a mainly rural area with atrocious public transport links, the internet has been one of my main sources to acquire items.

Ebay for all its faults, policy changes & corporate idiosyncrasies is still a 'go to' place for me. It is also where I sell most of my own art creations which I'm letting go in order to downsize the sheer volume of my kuriology collections.

Christmas 2017 has been & gone & New year celebrations are over.  

Now it is time for serious collectors of weird 'stuff' to get back to focusing on what is really important.  Obtaining strange & wonderful  further acquisitions for their collections. To assist in this quest we are continuing to release creations from our Art Laboratory in Cornwall (UK).

Over the 2017 festive season at the Kuriology Laboratory we scraped out a few petri dishes, rinsed out test tubes & wiped out a few crusty flasks.  Tossed the resulting residue into a beaker, gave it a stir, - just to see what developed.

What this really means is experimental tinkering & fiddling with some new Kuriology creations - all whilst bingeing on television box sets over Christmas (Primarily Game of thrones season 7), armed with obligatory snacks & box of chocolates & jelly babies (I like Jelly Babies, originally called 'Peace Babies' after WWI.)

Over the coming year expect a few  Kuriology #DeadGothic figures.  

These Kuriology creations are Inspired by a combination of

•  (i) Latin American 'Day of the Dead' figures 
• (ii) Voodoo dolls & 
• (iii) Traditional Witchcraft poppets.
• (IV) Gothic Victorian characters  

These are a good dose of gothic macabre/steampunk-esque, shamanic/witchcraft fetish figures. Each individually hand crafted.  No plastic molds here!

Folk art, primitive art, outsider art - it all seems to me be reflective of usually ordinary people simply wishing to express their own creativity without the bounds, constraints or rules of conventional art or art establishments. Kuriology Art is Folk, Primitive & Outsider, creations made for the joy of being creative. 

I have always had a mild fascination with mythology & mythical beasts primarily from Greek & Roman mythologies.   Greek Satyr & their Roman counterparts,fauns, have always appealed.  Pan (or Celtic Cernunnos like horned deities) cloven hoofed, horned & a little on the dark side.  Depicted as Devils by abrahamic  dogmas & religions  that always felt to me on a bit of a power trip by those in positions of authority to try to sub verse & sub due older pagan religions & belief systems.   I have always had a problem with the bible ever since I learned as quite a young man it is just a book compiled by the Council of Nicea, a committee under Roman Emperor Constantine. The misery & pain inflicted upon humanity by dogmatic fanatics of this & other such books. Plus, we all know as fact that the camel was a badly designed horse drawn up by a committee, as was the Kangaroo, actually a mouse drawn up by another committee.

It is only in quite recent years I have learned of 'Krampus', a traditional Christmas Demon in primarily Germanic countries in Northern Europe.  Seemingly a hangover from deeper older faiths, subdued by Christianity.  Subdued to the point where the demon now wears chains.

This Christmas demon is however a modern social workers nightmare.  Where as Santa rewards children (& some adults) for good behavior over the year - Krampus is the opposite.  This dark beast with an enlarged tongue, horns coven hooves, runs around abducting naughty children either in a sack or in a woven basket.  Physical violence is part of the tradition by beating the children by spanking or with birch cane or canes, or even in some extreme depictions with a whip? 

Clearly the threat of being put on Santa's naughty list is not enough of a deterrence for 'some' kids - to the point where they are threatened with abduction & torture to behave....interesting!

In recent years 'Krampus' has been undergoing what some may call 'Disneyfication'.  He is being made 'cute', cuddly & simply a little misunderstood.  Personally, I prefer the depiction of a demon that frightens the crap out of people.

Most of us have at one time been stumped when faced with getting a gift for someone which requires being something really unusual, completely off-the- wall, bonkers mad & utterly strange 

....especially for Secret Santa!

Then there are the people we need to get gifts for who already seem to have 'nearly everything.  Not to mention - 'The Collectors'....whose tastes are, well sometimes a little strange & may be teetering on the edge of what is socially acceptabile.

Kuriology has Good News for gift givers!   In all probability their target gift recipients won't yet have acquired weird & wonderful, quirky & bizarre creations from Kuriology.

...and sometimes those of us who actually  like the peculiar, strange & quirky need to reward ourselves.  Socks, ties & underpants are completely practical, but what was really wanted was something strange....say like a triffid, or trilobite or a big turtle?
